- 250 gstale white bread or bread rolls(cut into 1/2-inch cubes)
- 250 mlmilk
- 1 tbspbutterMilch
- 1 mediumonion(finely chopped)
- 2 largeeggs
- 2 tbspfresh parsley(chopped)
- 0.5 tspsalt
- 0.25 tspblack pepper
- 1 pinchnutmeg(freshly grated)
- tbspall-purpose flour(optional, if mixture is too wet)
Instructions
Place the bread cubes in a large bowl. Heat the milk in a small saucepan until lukewarm, then pour it over the bread cubes. Let it soak for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bread is softened.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent and lightly golden, about 5-7 minutes. Let cool slightly.
Add the sautéed onions, eggs, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and nutmeg to the softened bread mixture. Mix everything thoroughly with your hands until well combined. If the mixture feels too wet to form dumplings, add 1-2 tablespoons of flour.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle simmer (not a rolling boil). With wet hands, form the mixture into approximately 8-10 uniform dumplings, about 2-2.5 inches in diameter.
Carefully place the dumplings into the simmering water. Reduce the heat to low, ensuring the water remains at a very gentle simmer. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings float to the surface and are cooked through. You can test one by cutting it open; it should be light and fluffy inside.
Remove the cooked dumplings with a slotted spoon and drain well. Serve immediately as a delicious side dish with your favorite roasts, gravies, or goulash.
